5 Seconds of Summer’s pop-punk Hero of Time, Michael Clifford, has accepted fate and embarked on a new sidequest in the form of his first solo single titled “cool.”
The new single sees the dyed-hair maniac returning to his pop-punk roots, perfectly bridging new with old in a classic return to form that’ll have 5 Seconds of Summer fans longing even more for the old days, while kicking off their shoes and dancing to the vibrant vocals of Michael Clifford while singing a loud, “am I cool enough?,” while the track repeats over-and-over in the background.
Michael Clifford’s “cool” comes tag-teamed with a visually stunning music video directed by Bobby Hanaford that sees the pop-punk pirate going through the motions while the life of a musician spins around him.
As a 5SOS is pop-punk defender back in the day, “cool” continues to cement why Michael Clifford was always cut above the rest when it comes to the modern, mainstream pop-punk sound and persona. I can almost confidently say “cool” will be among my top listened-to songs of the year before the month is even over.
Alongside Michael himself, “cool” had an A-class team of writers bringing the concept to life with Andrew Maxwell Goldstein, Elijah Noll, Marcus Lomax, and 5SOS bandmate Calum Hood.
“cool” is the first release from Michael Clifford’s signing to Hopeless Records, which sees the 5SOS guitarist join the likes of Neck Deep, PVRIS, Stand Atlantic, and Trophy Eyes, to name a few.
In time, we’re hoping to find out more of Michael Clifford’s masterplan for his exciting new sidequest as 2025 continues to spin through.
